Anarchy: mess, chaos, disorder. Anarchism: stirring up chaos, trying to lead people to illegality

Anarchist: a person who does not recognize a system and order; subverter, rebel, mischief maker. The words anarchy and terror are usually confused. Chaos and mess are dominant in anarchy. Anarchy does not like any administration or regime in the world and tries to destroy and eliminate it. However, terror is different. It rebels against the regime that it does not like. However, when it gets what it wants, it leaves the arms and calms down. The religion of Islam opposes both of them but regards anarchism as more dangerous. For, a religion that aims to lead humanity to high ethics and a regular life will definitely declare anarchism, which is the focus of noncompliance and subversive activities, as the most dangerous and harmful activity  

As a matter of fact, the Quran damns terror and describes anarchism and causing mischief and chaos as a terrifying and dangerous thing. Islam forbids all kinds of terror,oppression and treachery. It opposes all kinds of anarchism and mischief making. The religion of Islam does not reciprocate harm with harm and oppression with oppression. Islam was sent by Allah to establish justice, to prevent the domination and tyranny of unruly souls and to moderate human conscience. Therefore, the religion of Islam is very sensitive regarding the issue. The Quran describes killing a person unjustly as a terrifying murder committed against the whole humanity: "if anyone slew a person―unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land― it would be AS IF HE SLEW THE WHOLE PEOPLE: and if anyone saved a life it would be AS IF HE SAVED THE LIFE OF THE WHOLE PEOPLE ." (al-Maida, 32) Along with terror, the Quran damns all kinds of mischief and anarchy. The Quran attracts attention to the mischief and evil of those who cause mischief and sow seeds of mischief when they become administrators, showing clearly the horridness of troublemaking and severity of mischief: "When he turns his back his aim everywhere is to spread mischief through the earth and destroy crops and cattle. But Allah loveth not mischief." (al-Baqara 2/205)

The Quran also forbids mischief and shows mischief and tumult to be more dangerous and harmful than murder. Indeed, making mischief may cause the material and spiritual death of more people. Allah Almighty states the following in a verse: "Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter" (al-Baqara, 217 )

A Muslim who benefits from these messages and lessons of the Quran seriously does not have enmity, savagery and mischief making in his spirit. He has a kind of brotherhood even with his biggest enemy. A believer feels the reality of "showing tolerance to the creature due to the Creator" in the depths of his conscience. A believer is a warrior of love; he has no time for enmity. (Şener Dilek, İslam Dininin Esasları) Allah Almighty states in the Quran that temples are protected thanks to the prevention of the harms of some people by others and attracts the attention of the people to the protection of the harms: "Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure." (al-Hajj, 40) Hz. Muhammad (pbuh), who is the Prophet of Islam, is a prophet of mercy and compassion. Allah Almighty states the following in the Quran: "(O Muhammad!) We sent thee not, but as a mercy for all creatures." (al-Anbiya,107 )  Hz. Prophet displayed all aspects of high ethics throughout his life and asked his Companions to keep away from mischief. He seriously ordered them to avoid mischief: "Avoid mischief. At that time, the tongue will be worse than a blow of the sword." (Ibn Majah, Fitan, 24 )

The most painful scenes of anarchy in the history of Islam were caused by the sect of Ismailiyya (Batiniyya), who claimed to be Shiites. The bloody incidents caused by this sect became the most devastating elements of mischief in the history of Islam. These bloody anarchists of Asia caused mischief in ideas, creed, ethics and life; they disturbed the peace and tranquility in the Islamic world for years. The leaders and organizers of these anarchists are Hasan Sabbah, who was called "Sheikh al-Jabal" and his man called Fedayeen of Paradise.

Hasan Sabbah was a faithless and ruthless enemy of the Seljuk Empire. His aim was to demolish this strong state, which prevented the ideology of Batiniyya from spreading. He had gardens that corresponded to the descriptions of Paradise built in order to realize this aim. He had dazzling pavilions and palaces constructed in these gardens. There were singers and young girls who were like houris of Paradise in these pavilions and palaces.

Hasan Sabbah's men gathered brave and venturous young men from various regions and brought them to Alamut Castle. These young men were first told about Paradise and the pleasures and entertainment of Paradise. Then, they were given some narcotic drugs and taken to so called gardens of Paradise. When these young men came round and opened their eyes, they saw magnificent pavilions, young girls like houris, colorful flowers and orchards; they believed that they were really in the paradise promised by Hasan Sabbah. They spent their days in pleasure and entertainment. After a while, they were given narcotic drugs again and taken out of the garden of paradise. After that, the biggest desires of these young men were to be able to enter Hasan Sabbah's gardens of paradise. With this tricky plan, Hasan Sabah made these young men obedient to him and used them as his "suicide teams". When Hasan Sabbah wanted somebody to be killed, he would call one of these young men and say to him, "Go and kill such and such a person; if you do it, I will send you to paradise. If you die, I will send my angels and take you to paradise." Thus, these young men, who yearned for the love of the so-called paradise, would fulfill the orders of their sheikh in full submission and kill that person at any cost.

Hasan Sabbah carried out the activities of anarchy at this castle for 33 years. This anarchist network of Persian Shiites killed thousands of Muslims. They broke the social peace and caused terror. They martyred Nizamulmulk, who was a shrewd statesman and the world-famous vizier of Seljuks. They killed the scholars whom they regarded as a barrier to the spread of Shia. This gang of anarchy attacked the hajjis returning from Arafat to Makkah in the year 317 H. They killed most of them with their swords. Some hajjis who survived this massacre took refuge in the Kaaba but these anarchists entered the Kaaba and killed them in the Kaaba. They even threw some of the dead bodies into Zamzam well.

They plundered the cover of the Kaaba; they removed the door of the Kaaba and Hajar al-Aswad. Hajar al-Aswad remained in their hands for 22 years until the year 339 H. The government in Baghdad at that time offered 50.000 gold coins to these murderers in order to take Hajar al-Aswad back but they refused it.

Finally, they returned Hajar al-Aswad as a result of the severe threats of the "Mahdi" of Fatimis in Africa. ( Mehmet Kırkıncı, Alevilik Nedir?, Zafer Publications)

The biggest reason for anarchism is faithlessness; hence, its biggest enemy is the realities of belief and the Quran. Therefore, Badiuzzaman Said Nursi, who expressed the realities of belief and the Quran in accordance with the realization of this age, states that the only way of preventing anarchy is to embrace the realities of belief, to practice them in our life and to internalize them as follows:

"Towns are also households for their inhabitants. If belief in the hereafter does not govern among the members of that large family vices like malice, self-interest, false pretences, selfishness, artificiality, hypocrisy, bribery, and deception will dominate, displacing sincerity, cordiality, virtue, zeal, self-sacrifice, seeking Allah’s pleasure and the reward of the hereafter, which are bases of good conduct and morality. Anarchy and savagery will govern under the superficial order and humanity, poisoning the life of the town. The children will become troublemakers, the youth will take to drink, the strong will embark on oppression, and the elderly start to weep." (Şualar (Rays), 228)

"Without religious education, Muslims cannot be governed except by means of absolute despotism and absolute bribery. For just as up to the present no Muslim has ever become a true Christian or Jew, they rather become irreligious and completely corrupted; so a Muslim cannot become a communist; he turns into an anarchist and can be governed by nothing other than absolute despotism. We Risale-i Nur students are working both for government, and public order, and the happiness of the country and nation. Those opposed to us are irreligious anarchists and enemies of the country and nation. It is essential that the Government should not interfere with us, but protect and assist us." (Şualar (Rays), 517)

"A Muslim does not resemble others. A Muslim who leaves his religion and exits Islam falls into absolute unbelief. He becomes an anarchist; he cannot be managed any longer. Although fifty percent of those who received the previous Islamic education are apparent and the other fifty percent act disinterestedly toward our national and Islamic customs, the possibility of ninety percent of the people being subject to their evil-commanding soul fifty years later and leading the nation and the country to anarchism and the feeling of seeking a solution to that trouble prevented me from dealing with politics and the people of this century twenty years ago and cut off the relationship of Risale-i Nur and its students with this age; they do not struggle against it and they are not engaged with it." (Emirdağ Lahikası-1, 22)

"If a Muslim leaves Islam, he becomes an apostate and an anarchist; it becomes like poison in the community life. What the religion prohibits strongly is mischief and anarchy. For, anarchy does not recognize any rights. It transforms the characteristics of humanity and the works of the civilization into the characteristics of the animals; the Quran indicates that it is the committee of Yajuj (Gog) and Majuj (Magog) at the end of time." ( Emirdağ Lahikası 2, 160)

As it is understood from the statements above, the activities of anarchism, which set humanity ablaze and try to destroy humanity, are described as "Yajuj and Majuj", the ferocious group that will cause Doomsday, in verses and hadiths. The only way to resist these unruly and noncompliant anarchy groups is to hold on the realities of belief and the Quran.
